Optimising F5 Applications for Central Government

Overview

Our client, a central Government department, sought expert assistance in migrating to the cloud. As well as this, they were looking for help in optimising F5 applications currently in use. Operating as the UK’s leading F5 specialists and an F5 Gold Partner, FullProxy was chosen to manage this critical transition. The organisation needed to implement proper load balancing to maintain uninterrupted public services and migrate to the cloud to enhance productivity and streamline operations.

The Challenge

The central Government organisation faced a complex set of challenges that threatened the continuity of vital public services and hindered their ability to embrace modern, efficient work practices. At the forefront of these issues was the lack of proper load balancing. Without this crucial infrastructure in place, a single server failure could potentially cause significant disruption to essential public services.

The Importance of Optimising F5 Applications

This vulnerability underscored the urgent need for implementing F5 Local Traffic Manager (LTM), which meant a solution capable of monitoring server health and automatically rerouting traffic to alternative data centres in the event of a failure. Compounding this challenge was the organisation’s need to undertake an extensive migration to Office 365 and Microsoft Exchange. This transition was essential for boosting productivity and streamlining processes across the department. However, such a large-scale migration presented its own set of complexities – requiring careful planning and execution to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations. The team required expert assistance in troubleshooting the existing F5 applications on their network. These applications needed to be reconfigured to achieve optimal performance and data centre resilience.

Seamless Integration is Vital

The challenge lay not only in optimising these applications but also in ensuring they would integrate seamlessly with the new cloud-based infrastructure. Compounding this, the Government department faced the overarching challenge of managing this complex transition while maintaining the high standards of security and reliability expected of a central Government entity. This necessitated a partner with not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of the unique requirements and constraints of governmental operations.

Did you know?

According to GOV.UK Government organisations are routinely and relentlessly targeted: of the 777 incidents managed by the National Cyber Security Centre between September 2020 and August 2021, around 40% were aimed at the public sector. This upward trend shows no signs of stopping.
